United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced the launch of its new, online H1B visa cap registration system for employers. The new system will open at noon on Sunday, March 1, 2020 to US employers seeking to sponsor skilled foreign workers for a H1B visa in the 2021 fiscal year, and will close at noon on March 20, 2020.

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) recently announced highly anticipated changes to its permanent residency program. Effective June 14, 2018, the Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) is available as a potential path to permanent residency in the province. The AOS replaces the Employer-Driven Stream and Strategic Recruitment Stream under the AINP. The AOS is also open to international post-secondary graduates who have graduated from an approved Alberta post-secondary institution and who hold a valid post-grad work permit.

The Alberta Express Entry Stream allows Alberta to nominate a limited number of qualified candidates from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s Express Entry system. Candidates who have demonstrated strong ties to Alberta or who can help support the government’s economic development and diversification priorities may be asked to submit an application.

The Australian government has turned down the UK’s offer of a post-Brexit trade agreement that included visa-free work and travel between the two countries. Trade minister Simon Birmingham said full free movement would not be accepted because it could cause an exodus of highly trained workers to the UK and an influx of unskilled British workers to Sydney and Melbourne. Last year, ministers in New Zealand voiced similar fears of a brain drain.
